Best Shipping Company in Egypt for Small Business: What to Compare Beyond Price
If you sell on WhatsApp or Instagram in Egypt and ship cash on delivery (COD), you've probably asked: what's the best shipping company for my small business? The honest answer is that there is no single "best" courier — there's the one that fits your return rate, your cash flow, and the governorates you actually ship to. And the companies with the lowest headline price per parcel are often the ones that cost you the most by the end of the month.
This guide walks through what to compare between couriers: COD settlement speed, RTO fees, coverage, and the small operational details that decide whether shipping grows your margin or eats it.
1. COD settlement: when do you actually get your money?
For most small sellers in Egypt, COD is 70–95% of orders. That means the courier is holding your cash. The single most important number to compare is how many days after delivery you get paid.
Ask each courier these exact questions, in writing:
- How many days after a successful delivery do you transfer the COD amount?
- Is it a fixed cycle (e.g. every Sunday) or per-shipment?
- What's the minimum payout before you transfer?
- Do you deduct shipping fees, RTO fees and any penalties from the same settlement, or invoice separately?
- What happens if a customer pays but the courier's report is delayed?
A courier that pays in 3 days at 55 EGP per parcel can be better than one that pays in 14 days at 45 EGP. If you're running on thin cash, a 10-day delay on 100 orders a week is a real financing cost — you're effectively lending the courier your inventory money.
Failure mode to watch: "weekly settlement" that quietly becomes "weekly settlement after the courier's finance team confirms the batch." Ask for the actual payment dates of your last three settlements in writing before you commit volume.
2. RTO fees: the number that kills small sellers
RTO (Return to Origin) is when the customer refuses or doesn't answer, and the parcel comes back to you. Every courier in Egypt charges something for RTO — the question is what.
Compare these, not the delivery price:
- RTO fee per parcel — often 50–100% of the original shipping fee.
- RTO fee for "customer unreachable" vs "customer refused" — some couriers charge the same, some charge less for refused.
- Free RTO allowance — a few couriers give you X free RTOs per month or per 100 shipments. Ask.
- Return shipping back to you — is it included in the RTO fee, or do you pay a second fee to get the parcel back?
If your category has a 20–30% RTO rate (fashion, shoes, cosmetics — you know who you are), a 20 EGP difference in RTO fee on 100 returns per month is 2,000 EGP. That's often more than the per-parcel savings you were chasing.
Failure mode to watch: couriers that quote a low RTO fee but charge a "storage fee" if the returned parcel sits in their warehouse more than 3 days. Read the RTO clause line by line.
3. Coverage: which governorates, and how fast?
Most couriers in Egypt cover Cairo, Giza and Alexandria well. The differences show up in:
- Delta and Upper Egypt cities — Mansoura, Tanta, Zagazig, Assiut, Sohag, Aswan. Some couriers deliver in 2 days, others in 5.
- Villages and rural addresses — many couriers hand off to a local agent, which adds 1–3 days and sometimes an extra fee.
- Pickup — do they come to your door, or do you drop at a branch? For a small seller packing at home, home pickup is often worth 5–10 EGP per parcel.
Before you sign, ask for a delivery time map by governorate. Then compare it against where your last 50 orders actually went — not where you think they went. Most sellers are surprised.
4. The operational details that decide everything
These don't show up in the price list but they decide whether shipping is smooth or a daily fight:
- API and bulk upload. Can you push 30 orders at once from a sheet or directly from your order system? Or do you type each one?
- Tracking visibility. Can you see status per parcel without calling a rep? If you're answering "where's my order?" on WhatsApp 20 times a day, this matters.
- Customer-facing SMS/WhatsApp. Does the courier send the customer a tracking message, or do you?
- Refusal handling. When a customer refuses, who calls them first — you or the courier? Some couriers attempt a re-delivery, some don't.
- Insurance. What's covered if a parcel is lost? What's the cap per shipment? What's the claim process and how long does it take?
- Account manager. For under 50 parcels a week, you often get a shared WhatsApp group. That's fine — but ask who answers on Fridays.
5. How to actually choose (a 7-day test)
Don't switch your whole operation based on a price list. Run this test:
- Pick two couriers that look close on paper.
- Send 20 real orders through each — same products, same governorates.
- Track: delivery time, RTO rate, COD settlement date (actual, not promised), and any surprise fees.
- After 7 days, calculate your true cost per delivered order: (shipping + RTO fees + returns) ÷ delivered orders.
- Negotiate from that number, not from the headline price.
Most sellers find the "cheapest" courier costs 15–25% more per delivered order once RTO and settlement delays are counted.
6. Where this connects to your chat workflow
Shipping performance is only half the story — the other half is what happens in the WhatsApp or Instagram chat before the parcel ships. A customer who confirms the address, the size and the COD amount in the chat is far less likely to refuse at the door. Sending a clear confirmation message before you hand the parcel to the courier is the cheapest RTO reduction you'll ever do.
If you're handling a lot of chats and orders, tools like Co-Social keep the conversation and the order details in one place, so the address and size you send to the courier match what the customer actually confirmed — not what you remembered from three messages ago.
Quick checklist before you sign with any courier
- COD settlement: number of days, cycle, minimum payout — in writing.
- RTO fee: per parcel, refused vs unreachable, free allowance, return-to-you cost.
- Coverage: delivery time by governorate, village handling, pickup location.
- API and bulk upload available.
- Tracking visible to you and to the customer.
- Insurance cap and claim process.
- Who you call on Friday at 6pm when a parcel is stuck.
Pick the courier that answers those seven questions clearly. That's your best shipping company in Egypt — not the one with the lowest number on the first line.
